There's a beautiful little playground and picnic area on Corrigan Drive in South Park, just adjacent to a little creek and the tennis courts. The late-afternoon sun slants through a majestic stand of trees and makes this an ideal place for a swinging sing-along.

There's nothing like a family picnic for bringing everyone together for good fun and good food. This swing in the ever-generous Bill and Mimi's backyard was the first one Clara ever tried, and -- thanks to the extra-large arc from an extra-big tree -- it's still her favorite. You can see here that she's got very little patience for static activities like posing for photos: one of her favorite words is "Go! Go! Go!"

It's never too early to steer young athletes toward a pressure-packed career in top-flight international sports. That's why we're following the old East German model and sending Clara to an intensive volleyball-only training camp for two-year-olds -- just as soon as we can find one....

more watery fun

We spent a day with Grandma at Idlewild Park, up in the Laurel Highlands near Ligonier. A scenic drive to and fro; a sunny morning in the old-school Storybook Forest; a classic artery-clogging amusement-park lunch; a delightful afternoon in the adjacent water park: highly recommended, and we'll be back next summer, when Clara's big enough for some of the rides.

just another day at the beach

Xisca and Clara spent a glorious month visiting the family in Mallorca this summer, and Daddy joined them for the last two weeks. The weather cooperated nicely, and we squeezed in as much sun/sand/surf time as we could. This beach -- a wide, windswept strand on the northeast coast -- was well worth the drive. Daddy built sand replicas of nearby Castell de Capdepera as fast as he could, while little Clarazilla gleefully knocked `em down. We all enjoyed splashing about in crystal-clear water that sparkled like champagne....
